Paleo German Spiced Wine

One of my favorite things about holidays are the traditions my family has. As we get older, some traditions have faded, but we’ve also started new traditions. One of my favorite traditions (since I turned 21) is my mom making German spiced wine on Christmas. I’m so glad I’ve created a pretty delicious paleo German spiced wine recipe to share with y’all!

My family is originally from Germany and my mom and I dream of going to Germany for the Christmas markets or Weihnachtsmarkt. I look at photos on Instagram and see everyone drinking Glühwein and enjoying the gorgeous markets. Maybe one day we’ll make it to Germany in December until then we’ll make our own spiced wine at home.

Classic German spice wine should be sipped hot, while enjoying the cold weather…but since I live in Texas and it’s normally 70+ degrees on Christmas, I love to enjoy mine with a few ice cubes. Also classic Glühwein is made with white sugar. I decided to try and recreate it using coconut sugar and I’m so glad it turned out well! I recipe tested this last weekend and the first batch didn’t taste right, but the second batch was perfect!

What’s the family tradition you look forward to? Let me know if you try the Paleo German spiced wine and let me know what you think!

Paleo German Spiced Wine
Ingredients
  • 1 bottle red wine
  • 3/4 cup water
  • 1 cup coconut sugar
  • 1 cinnamon stick
  • 1 orange orange sliced
  • 10 cloves (plus a few more)
Instructions
  1. First, mix the water, coconut sugar, cinnamon stick and cloves in a medium saucepan. Turn to medium heat and stir until the coconut sugar is dissolved into the water and simmer.

  2. Cut the orange in half and juice into the pot. Stick 6 cloves into each half of the orange peel and drop into the saucepan.

  3. Lastly, pour in the wine and allow it to heat. Don’t let it boil.

  4. Serve and enjoy!
